Blunder in the Champions League and non-qualification for the World Cup: nothing is going well for Donnarumma who wants to return to Italy

“Desire of Italy”: this is how the Gazzetta dello Sport headlined its headline this Thursday when talking about the goalkeeper of the National Team, Gigi Donnarumma. According to the Italian press, the former AC Milan player would not be happy in Paris. The one who was voted best player of the last Euro has been nothing more than a shadow of himself for a few weeks.

He hit rock bottom with his huge blunder against Real Madrid in the Champions League which launched the Merengues on the way to a comeback. Even in selection, Donnarumma had to accuse the critics after two half-hearted meetings against North Macedonia and Turkey and the non-qualification for the World Cup.

For the Corriere della Sera, the cause of all his ills would be partly linked to the tough competition with Keylor Navas, “source of suffering” for the 23-year-old goalkeeper even if he had taken a slight ascendancy over the Costa Rican in recent weeks. Arrived free this summer in the French capital, Donnarumma has a contract until 2026 with PSG but would therefore already like to return to Italy. According to the Italian media, the Boot clubs capable of attracting him are few. Juventus is the name that comes up most often even if the player’s salary is a problem, he who earns 7 million € a year and can go up to 10 million with bonuses.

The Old Lady could make an offer in the summer … 2023, after the entry into force of the Decreto Crescita, a law encouraging high salaries to come or return to Italy. Clubs could thus reduce the tax rate on new players domiciled outside La Botte in the last two years.

Donnarumma’s stay in Paris is therefore not over yet. And the Corriere della Sera specifies however that the goalkeeper could review his position in the event of the departure of Keylor Navas. Whatever happens, this is a new file placed on the table of Parisian leaders during the next transfer window, after the Mbappé and Neymar files.
