Binder Blasts To The Top: A Look Ahead at Qatar GP with Randy Mamola
welcome back, race fans, to another thrilling edition of “Inside the Track”! Today we’re diving headfirst into the heart-pounding action unfolding at the Losail International Circuit for the Qatar MotoGP. Joining me, as always, is the legendary three-time 500cc Grand Prix winner, Randy Mamola, to dissect the electrifying frist free practice session.
Randy, Brad Binder just stormed to the top of the timesheets with an incredibly close finish, edging out Takaaki Nakagami by a mere 0.056 seconds. What are your initial impressions of this session?
Randy Mamola: “Wow, Michael, what a start to the Qatar GP!BinderS showing us exactly why he’s a force to be reckoned with. That late surge was notable. Nakagami was right there with him though, and Rins is hot on their tails. It’s shaping up to be a fiercely competitive battle for the top spot.”
The session was anything but predictable, with several riders taking turns at the top. Can you shed some light on the constant shifting we saw in the timesheets?
MM: “Definitely, the Losail circuit has always been a track known for its tight margins. A tenth of a second can make all the difference here. The riders are pushing their machines to the absolute limit, and the conditions tonight, even though seemingly favorable, can change quickly in the desert. Remember, it’s still early days. This is just Free Practice 1 – we’re only scratching the surface of what these racers are capable of.”
We also saw Francesco Bagnaia suffer a crash at turn six. thankfully, he seemed okay, but do you think this might rattle him going into the later sessions?
RM: “It never feels good to go down, especially early on. Bagnaia is a championship contender,so this setback won’t deter him. He’ll be analyzing the crash, working with his team to understand what happened, and coming back even stronger. Today was a reminder that anything can happen in MotoGP.”
The battle for the top ten was intense, with Marc Marquez and Joan Mir right in the mix. How would you assess their performances today?
RM: “Marquez looking strong is never a surprise. He’s always pushing the limits. Mir also looks cozy on the Suzuki. Both riders have the potential to challenge for the podium this weekend, but they’ll need to be absolutely flawless with their riding and strategy.”
Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend, what are your predictions for the Qatar GP?
RM: “It’s going to be a nail-biter, Michael. The top riders are so evenly matched. Binder’s obviously got the early momentum, but I wouldn’t count out any of the usual suspects. The desert heat, the track conditions, and even the slightest error can all play a significant role. This is MotoGP – anything can happen!”
