Setting teh Net High: A Badminton Doubles Chat with Olympian Hendra setiawan
We’re thrilled to welcome badminton legend Hendra Setiawan, an Olympic gold medalist and a dominant force in men’s doubles for over a decade, to our platform today. Hendra, thanks for joining us!
Hendra: Happy to be here! Let’s talk badminton!
Moderator: Absolutely. We recently stumbled upon an exciting initiative: ‘brisminton’, a badminton doubles session open to players of all levels at the Kingsdown Sports Centre. What are your thoughts on initiatives like this that aim to make badminton accessible to everyone, regardless of skill level?
Hendra: Its fantastic! Badminton is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone, and creating inclusive spaces like ‘brisminton’ is key to spreading the love for the game. Everyone deserves the chance to experience the thrill of a rally, whether you’re a seasoned competitive player or just starting out.
Moderator: We couldn’t agree more. The fact that they provide shuttlecocks and encourage a fun, social habitat speaks volumes about their vision. Your career has been defined by unbelievable partnerships on the court. What advice would you give to those who are just starting out with doubles, perhaps finding a teammate through sessions like ‘brisminton’?
Hendra: Dialogue is paramount. Doubles badminton requires a strong sense of understanding between partners, both on and off the court. Talk, listen, and learn each other’s game. Knowing your partner’s strengths and weaknesses will allow you to strategize effectively and build a powerful team.
Moderator: That’s invaluable advice, Hendra. When it comes to these casual sessions, some people might be hesitant due to concerns about skill disparity. How would you address the worries of someone who feels they might not be “good enough”?
Hendra: I understand those concerns! But remember, badminton is ultimately about having fun and enjoying the company of others who share your passion. Everyone starts somewhere. These sessions are the perfect environment to learn, improve, and build confidence. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and give it a try!
Moderator: Well said! Each session is priced at £6, which seems quite reasonable considering they also offer a social environment. Do you think accessibility plays a crucial role in making a sport like badminton thrive?
Hendra: Absolutely! Making the sport accessible, both through affordable pricing and welcoming communities such as ‘brisminton’, is vital. When people can easily access badminton, they’re more likely to give it a try, fall in love with the game, and contribute to its growth.
Moderator: Excellent point, Hendra. As a seasoned player, what’s your take on practicing and playing with different partners? Is that something you’d encourage?
Hendra: Without a doubt! Playing with various partners can expose you to different playing styles, strategies, and strengths. It broadens your understanding of the game and helps you develop your own abilities. Don’t be afraid to mix it up!
