HISTORICAL DATA

2020 – A series of severe tornadoes with wind speeds of up to 280 kilometers per hour swept across the US state of Tennessee. They kill 25 people and destroy hundreds of houses.

2017 – Egypt’s Supreme Court acquits former President Hosni Mubarak of complicity in the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the 2011 revolution. He was released from prison three weeks later.

2012 – In Brussels, 25 EU countries sign the so-called fiscal pact for a debt brake based on the German model. In the future, only participating countries will receive aid from the permanent ESM crisis fund. Great Britain and the Czech Republic reject the pact.

2007 – Even with a clear change in climate policy, the serious consequences of global climate change can at best be mitigated. The UN expert panel IPCC comes to this conclusion in the second part of its world climate report.

1994 – The federal government decides to build the Transrapid maglev train between Hamburg and Berlin. The plan is abandoned in 2000.

1987 – The Austrian pop singer Udo Jürgens performs in East Berlin’s Friedrichstadtpalast with his program “Duinetwegen”. A recording of the three-day guest performance is broadcast on GDR television.

1975 – In the elections to the Berlin House of Representatives, the CDU becomes the strongest party ahead of the SPD for the first time.

1972 – In Hamburg, when the Baader-Meinhof terrorists Manfred Grashof and Wolfgang Grundmann were arrested, there was a shootout. A police officer later succumbed to his injuries.

1962 – North American Professional Basketball League (NBA) star Wilt Chamberlain scores in championship game between
his Philadelphia Warriors and the New York Knicks became the first player to score 100 points in an NBA match. To date, the record has not been surpassed.
