Russian football has been sanctioned by FIFA and UEFA due to the war waged on Ukraine. His football federation fought back, with an appeal to the arbitral tribunal.

World football is punishing Russia after it invaded Ukraine almost two weeks ago. The penalty was given, namely a ban from playing in all competitions under FIFA and UEFA.

From FIFA, Russia is prohibited from wearing the Russian name and competing in various events, including the upcoming 2022 World Cup. Meanwhile at UEFA level, Russian clubs were removed from various ongoing competitions.

Russia apparently protested the sanctions imposed. Now, the Russian Football Union or FUR appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport or Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS].

In its appeal, Russia also appealed the attitude of several other European football federations, such as Poland, Sweden, the Czech Republic. These countries were the first to express their refusal to compete with Russia in various competitions, as a form of attitude against the ongoing war.

FUR has registered with CAS to challenge FIFA and UEFA sanctions. They hope that the sanctions imposed can be lifted. And on Tuesday (8/3) local time, CAS has received the appeal file from Russia.

CAS hopes to make a decision as soon as possible in the coming days. This is because the urgent situation requires that a firm stance against Russia be issued immediately.

At the UEFA level it is the same, Russia also sued the attitude of many federations that excommunicated Russia due to the war. In essence, Russian football wants its name to be restored so that it can return to play, including at the World Cup later this year.

Sanctions imposed on Russia related to the war continue to emerge. Finally, the Premier League said it stopped broadcasting matches in that country as a form of support for Ukraine.
