Champions League: UEFA will modify financial fair play, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi is delighted

Eleven years after its birth, financial fair play will experience a first major upheaval. Indeed according to L’Equipe, UEFA will announce during the next executive committee, scheduled for April 7, some changes from the 2022-2023 season. Three different themes are concerned. The first relates to authorized losses. To date, clubs are not allowed to spend more than their own actual income. A tolerance of thirty million euros is granted. This will now be increased to sixty million, subject to a guarantee from the shareholder. PSG and Manchester City could thus benefit from this rule which would allow them to spend a little more.

Among other changes, the wage bill would be regulated, because clubs would not be allowed to spend more than 90% of their income on wages from 2023. A figure that will drop to 80% in 2024, then 70% in 2025. A form of “salary cap”, but less restrictive than the NBA franchises can experience. Finally, the indebtedness of the clubs will finally be closely observed by UEFA. A rule that particularly affects Barça today in debt to the tune of 1.3 billion euros. He will have to reduce his debt by 10% each year. However, indebted clubs would only be affected if they show a negative financial result.

Each measure will be monitored and may be subject to withdrawal of points from the European institution or demotion in the lower European Cup. One man particularly welcomed the new measures. This is the president of the European Club Association, and of PSG, Nasser Al-Khelaifi: “UEFA has incorporated many comments made by the ECA and on behalf of the 240 clubs. We look forward to the implementation of the new system soon.”
