MEXICO CITY (AP) — Chivas dominated the match, but their strikers weren’t fine and settled for a 0-0 draw against América on Saturday night in the Mexican classic.
Guadalajara crashed a shot into a post and one more into the crossbar in two of several arrivals of danger that it generated in the match.
With the result, Chivas reaches 12 points that serve to place him in ninth position while waiting for the other results for the tenth date of the Closing tournament.
America remains with a single win. But when he reached seven points, he left the last place in the table to surpass Mazatlán on goal difference.
The match was held at the Akron stadium in the western city of Guadalajara with the conspicuous absence of the supporters of the two teams. A week ago, violence broke out in the stands of the Corregidora stadium in a match between Querétaro and Atlas, leaving 26 people hospitalized.
The Chivas leadership ceded the places that its ultras usually occupy to children from local foundations who dressed in white.
Before kick-off, the captains of the two teams sent messages calling for peace and the players from both squads lined up together for a group photo.
As in previous games, the match was stopped at 62 minutes for the players to gather in the center of the field to hug.
The match in Querétaro stopped just at 62, when fans entered the field to flee from the fight that broke out in the stands.
The match began with some Chivas who were better at the start and generated their first shot on goal in the 19th minute, through Alexis Vega.
América responded in the 36th when Uruguayan Federico Viñas hit a header that was deflected by goalkeeper Miguel Jiménez.
Chivas knocked on the door again in the 36th, when Vega made a shot from outside the area that crashed into the left post, the goal defended by Guillermo Ochoa.
Before the break, the Eagles tried their luck again with a shot from Colombian Roger Martínez that was rejected by Jiménez.
Guadalajara flirted again with the first goal of the match after 50 minutes, in a corner kick play in which the ball crashed into the crossbar.
One play later, the Eagles were left with 10 when Jonathan Dos Santos was sent off for a double yellow card.
Chivas knocked on the door again in the 57th minute with an attempt by Jesús Angulo that was hurriedly rejected by Ochoa.
América fell back to defend the tie, but still created danger in the 83rd minute with a shot from Chilean Diego Valdés that went wide.
BLUE CROSS COMES OUT OF THE BAD MOMENT
Paraguayan defender Juan Escobar scored a stunning second-half goal as Cruz Azul beat Pumas 2-1 on Saturday to snap a three-match winless streak.
The Peruvian Luis Abram put the Celestes in front in the 28th minute, but the Argentine Favio Álvarez leveled in the 30th and Escobar got the winning goal in the 69th.
The Machine had not won in the local tournament since the sixth date, when it beat Toluca.
With the victory, Cruz Azul now has 17 points and is placed in fifth position while waiting for the other results.
Pumas suffered its second consecutive defeat and extended its streak of games without a victory to four.
The university students remain with 11 units with which they slipped to the tenth step.
TIGERS RECIPE ANOTHER GOLLEA TO LEÓN
Argentine goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán saved a penalty, Frenchman André-Pierre Gignac extended his scoring streak to seven games and Tigres crushed León 3-0 to place second in the Clausura tournament.
Guzmán saved a shot from Ecuadorian Ángel Mena in the 11th minute and Gignac converted his goal in the 21st, while Colombian Luis Quiñones added a goal in the 27th and then set up a goal by Frenchman Florian Thauvin in the 71st.
Gignac now has eight goals, with which he stands alone at the top among the scorers in the local championship. The French striker has not scored as many goals in Mexico since he added 11 in 17 Apertura 2020 games.
Tigres reached 20 points and placed second while waiting for the other results for the tenth date.
León, who in the middle of the week was shaken 3-0 by the Seattle Sounders in Concacaf, remains with 15 points, in sixth position.
It seemed that everything would be different for La Fiera when Jesús Angulo committed a penalty on Colombian Andrés Mosquera, but Mena charged without power to Guzmán’s right flank, who deflected the attempt to preserve the 0-0.
Shortly after, a cross came from the right and goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota came out to deflect it unsuccessfully to leave the ball to Gignac, who converted with a soft shot that passed between the legs of a defender.
León was not recovering emotionally when Quiñones made a shot from 30 meters that took Cota by surprise for the 2-0.
Tigres added a goal in a great play by Quiñones, who took a ball in midfield, ran 35 meters and sent a cross from the left to the small area where Thauvin appeared to push the ball into the back of the net.
