Cori Gauff, 17, feels she has the game to win a Grand Slam but adds she needs to improve mentally to win her first Major. Last year, Gauff reached the quarterfinals of the French Open before losing to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.
Also, Gauff has reached the round of 16 twice at Wimbledon and reached the round of 16 once at the Australian Open. Also, Gauff has reached the round of 16 twice at Wimbledon and reached the round of 16 once at the Australian Open.
“I feel like for me, definitely I feel like I can go far in slams. For me it’s more of a mental thing when I’m mentally mature enough to win one. I feel like I have all the physical attributes and the game and everything.
I think it’s like a lot of the players on tour, we’re all pretty physically fit. We all have big serves or big forehands or some kind of weapon that helps us win matches,” Gauff said.
Gauff: Mentality is the key to winning a Grand Slam
Gauff had hoped to find a deep run at Melbourne Park this year but then suffered a surprise loss to Wang Qiang.
“I think what really separates the other players, the Grand Slam champions, from the rest is probably their mentality. I hope and have been working on being mentally mature to go far in Slams and hopefully win one,” Gauff added.
Gauff almost became a Grand Slam champion last year when she and Caty McNally finished second in the US Open doubles final. “Yeah, I mean when I play with Caty I think obviously we’re very good individual talents on the pitch.
I think what makes us good together is our friendship off the pitch. I think I do better playing with people I spend a lot of time with off the pitch. Yeah, I think doubles is a time when I can relax a little bit when there’s someone out there on the court,” explained Gauff. Photo credit: Jimmie48/WTA
