It should be the last home game for Göttingen’s Bundesliga women basketball team from Medical Instinct Veilchen BG 74 in the 2021/22 season. But several positive corona tests with the women from Göttingen on Sunday morning caused the encounter with the Rutronik Stars Keltern to be canceled at short notice. It is unlikely that the game of the 26th matchday in the women’s basketball Bundesliga (DBBL) will be rescheduled due to the tight schedule. Meanwhile, the DBBL has confirmed that four teams have to go into the second division.

The decision was made on Saturday afternoon at the general meeting, which was also attended by representatives of the Bundesliga teams. “So there will be no change in the original tender, which is why a total of four teams will be relegated,” confirmed DBBL board member Andreas Fink on Sunday evening. The man from Göttingen was unanimously re-elected to the board at the meeting with 13 votes.
However, a wildcard procedure could still be an option for the violets. Interested teams can use their license applications to apply for a starting place in the 2022/23 season in the DBBL. A decision is then made based on the scope and content of the applications. “In addition to the monetary aspects, youth work in the club is also one of the relevant criteria,” explains Fink, explaining the procedure for awarding a wildcard.
This means that the violets may still have one last chance to be able to present the fans with first-class basketball again in the coming season.
Whether the Bundesliga game against Keltern, originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, can be rescheduled at another date will only be decided in the next few days. However, the DBBL framework schedule makes it difficult to reschedule. The team from Keltern meets the Rhineland Lions in the semifinals of the cup competition next Saturday. If they win, the winner of the second semi-final between Herne and Hanover will be waiting the following Sunday. And the start of the playoffs is already planned for the following weekend.
Until then, the team from Keltern would still have to play four Bundesliga games – actually an impossibility. From a sporting point of view, the season of the women from Göttingen is over. After the home defeat against Wasserburg last Wednesday, coach Goran Lojo’s team is already in twelfth place in the table and thus one of four relegated teams from the top German division. Therefore, there is a high probability that the violets will no longer have the opportunity to say goodbye to their own fans during a Bundesliga game.
