Cuban Basketball’s Superior League Returns After Three-Year Hiatus

Cuban basketball enthusiasts can finally rejoice! After a three-year absence, the Superior Basketball League is set to make its triumphant return on April 1st.Eight teams, including reigning champions Villa Clara and runners-up Artemisa, will battle it out on the court, vying for the coveted title.

The league’s comeback was officially announced by Radio Rebelde, confirming the participation of santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spíritus, Matanzas, and Capitalinos. This news comes after a postponement from the initially scheduled March 2nd start date. National commissioner Dalia Henry, speaking to Radio Rebelde, explained the delay was necessary to ensure adequate preparation time for the provinces.

while the excitement for the league’s return is palpable, some logistical challenges remain. The venue for Artemisa’s home games is still undecided, with Pinar del Río and Havana being considered as potential alternatives. Similarly, the Giraldo Córdova Cardín arena, home to Ciego de Ávila’s Buffaloes, is undergoing maintenance and its readiness for the season opener is uncertain.

Adding to the complexity, the league faces scheduling constraints. Games are slated for 3:00 PM for women’s matches and 5:00 PM for men’s, with nighttime games contingent on energy availability. This scheduling could potentially impact fan attendance.

The Superior League’s hiatus in 2020 and 2021, attributed to fuel shortages exacerbated by the US embargo, dealt a important blow to Cuban basketball. The prolonged absence created a competitive void, hindering player development and dampening fan enthusiasm.

As the league strives to regain its momentum, it faces the daunting task of bridging the gap created by the lost years. the return of the Superior League marks a crucial step towards revitalizing Cuban basketball and reigniting the passion for the sport.
