Cuban Table Tennis Teams Dominate Caribbean Championship
Cuba’s men’s and women’s table tennis squads secured gold medals at the Caribbean table Tennis Championship held in Havana this past weekend.The cuban men triumphed over puerto Rico, while the women defeated the Dominican Republic in their respective finals.
Leading the charge for the Cuban men was Jorge Moises Campos, a standout player in recent years. Campos defeated Puerto Rico’s Ángel Naranjo in a hard-fought match, winning three sets to one with scores of 12-10, 11-2, 10-12, and 11-5. Adrian Perez also contributed to the victory, besting Puerto Rican oscar Birriel 3-1 (11-8, 10-12, 11-9, and 11-1).
Livan Martinez,another key member of the Cuban team,secured the initial victory against Daniel González in a closely contested five-set match. Martinez, who also plays professionally in the Czech Republic League, expressed confidence in his team’s abilities, stating they were well-prepared to face the top competition in the region.He emphasized the importance of the championship as a qualifier for both Pan-American and world events, highlighting the significance of earning qualifying points.
The Cuban women’s team, consisting of Daniela Fonseca, Idalys Lovet, and Karla Perez, emerged victorious against the dominican Republic with a 3-1 win. Fonseca, a participant in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, displayed her prowess by defeating Esmerlyn Castro in a thrilling five-set match. She also triumphed over Eva Brito, who had previously bested Perez.Idalys Lovet further solidified the Cuban victory with a win against Yasiris Ortiz.
The Caribbean Table Tennis Championship,which commenced on March 3rd and concluded on the 8th,attracted athletes from Barbados,haiti,Guyana,Jamaica,and Trinidad and Tobago,all vying for coveted Pan-American and world qualifying spots. The Cuban athletes continued their strong performance throughout the tournament, competing in 15 individual matches and a doubles match, as per the schedule set by the International Table Tennis Federation.

I have to start by congratulating you and the entire cuban contingent on this phenomenal win. The men’s team faced some stiff competition, but ultimately triumphed over Puerto Rico thanks to stellar performances from Jorge Moises Campos and Adrian Perez. what do you see as the key factors behind this success?
Cuesta: Thank you. It was certainly a hard-fought victory. Jorge, in particular, has been playing exceptionally well lately. His dedication and technical prowess are truly inspiring. Adrian also displayed remarkable resilience, pulling off a crucial win. Ultimately,I believe the key to thier success lay in their unwavering teamwork and strategic approach. They studied their opponents meticulously and adapted their game plan accordingly.
Absolutely. the women’s team, lead by Daniela Fonseca, Idalys Lovet, and Karla Perez, also did Cuba proud with a win against the Dominican Republic. Daniela, especially, shone radiant considering her experience on the world stage, having competed in the 2020 tokyo Olympics.
Cuesta: Daniela is a force to be reckoned with. Her experience at the Olympics undoubtedly contributed to her composure and strategic gameplay during the championship. Both Idalys and Karla also played pivotal roles, demonstrating incredible skill and determination.

Cuesta: I believe it does. This is a testament to the dedication and talent of our players, and the unwavering support of our coaching staff and national federation. This victory will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of Cuban table tennis players and hopefully propel us back to the forefront of the sport internationally.
