Cuban teams win gold medals in the Caribbean Table Tennis Championship

The Cuban men’s and women’s teams won this weekend the gold medals in the Caribbean Table Tennis Championshipbased in Havana, by defeating the teams of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, respectively.

One of the most outstanding Cuban players of recent times, Jorge Moises Campos, beat Puerto Rican Ángel Naranjo in his match with a result of three sets by one and scores of 12-10, 11-2, 10-12 and 11-5; while, Adrian Perez He also beat Puerto Rican Oscar Birriel 3-1 (11-8, 10-12, 11-9 and 11-1), according to the official website of the Latin American Table Tennis Union.

The first victory of the Cubans was in charge of Livan Martinez, who beat Daniel González in a close match 3-2 (12-10, 4-11, 11-8, 5-11 and 12-10). Martinez commented to the Cuban News Agency that since the beginning of the tournament he felt in very good shape and with energy to face the representatives of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, since they are the highest level in the area.

“We are prepared for any type of competition and it should continue that way, it is always positive to advance in an event like this, which brings qualifying points,” added the athlete, who also plays for the team from the city of Havířov, in the first division of the Czech Republic League.

The Cuban women’s team, made up of Daniela Fonseca, Idalys Lovet and Karla Perezbeat the Dominican Republic 3-1 in the final.

Fonseca defeated the Dominican Esmerlyn Castro in a tough match, in a match that ended 3-2, with scores of 11-8, 11-13, 11-2, 9-11 and 11-4. The Cuban, who participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympicsalso defeated Eva Brito 3-1, who previously beat Pérez.

The other match of the day also ended in local victory, in charge of Idalys Lovet against the Quisqueyan Yasiris Ortiz.

This championship, which began on March 3 and will run until the 8th, is a Pan-American and world qualifier, for which athletes from Barbados, Haiti, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

In the remainder of the contest, the Cuban athletes will compete in 15 individual matches and in the doubles match, according to the program designed by the International Table Tennis Federation.
