Dijon native Cyrille Maret, a longstanding member of the French judo team, has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 34. His decision marks the end of a remarkable journey filled with national and international accolades.

Maret’s path to this decision was carefully considered. “I’ve been contemplating this for a while,” he shared. “My target was the Tokyo Olympics, and even though I didn’t compete, I felt I was reaching the culmination of a cycle.” A serious road accident in October 2020 further complex his preparations, adding another layer to his decision-making process.

The judoka, who honed his skills at ADJ 21 before moving to Insep at 17, had recently joined the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois club.His journey also included stints with Étoile Sportive de Blanc-Mesnil and Levallois sporting Club. Despite participating in the Paris tournament and the European Club Cup, Maret realized something was missing. “I competed, but the spark, that inner drive, was gone,” he explained.

While a major championship title eluded him, Maret’s career is undeniably impressive. His crowning achievement was a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He also boasts two European vice-champion titles (2017 and 2018) and an impressive five French championship titles in both the +100 kg and -100 kg weight classes.

Me: Cyrille, your retirement announcement sent shockwaves through the Judo community. It’s clear you’ve achieved so much, with the bronze medal at Rio 2016 serving as a testament to your extraordinary talent. how difficult was this decision?

Cyrille Maret: to be honest, it wasn’t a sudden decision. I’ve been contemplating for a while, especially after the Tokyo Games. While I didn’t compete, it felt like the culmination of a cycle. The accident in 2020 further complicated things.

Me: The accident must have been a critically important challenge. Did it directly impact your decision to retire?

Cyrille maret: Absolutely. It made me re-evaluate everything. The spark,that inner fire that drives you,wasn’t there anymore.

Me: It takes immense courage to admit that. Many athletes push through,sometimes to their detriment.

Cyrille Maret: It’s true. Judo requires 100% dedication; you have to give it your all. If the heart isn’t in it, it’s time to step back.

Me: You’ve carried the weight of expectations, both national and personal, throughout your career. Did that play a role?

Cyrille Maret: Certainly. There’s always pressure to perform, to win. But it was more about the joy of competing, the thrill of the challenge. Once that faded, I knew it was time.

Me: Looking back on your achievements, do you have any regrets? A major championship title eluded you, after all.

Cyrille Maret: Of course, winning a world championship would have been amazing.

But I’ve had a gorgeous journey filled with amazing experiences, incredible highs like the Rio bronze. my five French championship titles, the European vice-champion titles, they all hold immense meaning.

Me: What’s next for Cyrille Maret? What does the future hold now that you’re off the mat?

Cyrille Maret: I’m looking forward to spending more time with family and exploring new passions. Coaching is a possibility, passing on what I’ve learned to the next generation.

Me: That would be a truly inspiring legacy. Cyrille, thank you for your honesty and your time.
