Daniil Medvedev tames Jenson Brooksby in Miami and closes in on world number one spot

One more victory and Daniil Medvedev will become world No. 1 again. But to win his ticket to the quarter-finals (against the winner of the Harris-Hurkacz match), the Russian had to work to extinguish (7-5, 6-1) this devil of Jenson Brooksby (39th), Tuesday, in the round of 16 of the Miami Masters 1000.

Started on the hats of wheels, the American won nine of the first ten points before spreading his knowledge of the game, with his ability to hold in rallies, while knowing how to place the acceleration which goes well by taking the ball early . During this impressive streak, he even got two double break points to be able to lead 4-1, which the Russian erased with two aces.

It was thanks to his serve, therefore, that Medvedev managed to stay in the match, before Brooksby ended up giving ground and committing a few big unforced errors. Led 5-3, the Russian then chained points and games to soar to 7-5, 3-0, then to finish on a series of twelve points to one against an opponent who had probably left too much energy in the previous round to eliminate Roberto Bautista Agut in 3:01 (after being down 4-0 in the last set…). Implacable in the rallies once he put his paw on the match, Medvedev therefore reached the quarter-finals in Miami. For now, he has never exceeded this milestone here.
