Despite home defeat, Liverpool past Inter to quarter-finals Champions League

Liverpool have made it to the last eight of the Champions League. The Reds lost at home by the smallest difference to Inter, but had won the first leg in Milan 2-0.

No Edin Dzeko in the base with the visitors, but Alexis Sanchez. A matter of getting a little more agility in the Italian attack, trainer Simone Inzaghi must have thought in the Anfield dressing rooms, where Liverpool have not lost this season.

And that approach worked. Inter put pressure on the home side looking for a goal. The fans were actually a bit quiet about it. It only became really quiet after half an hour, when the match was interrupted for a medical emergency in the Liverpool stands.

After the restart, Joel Matip headed on the crossbar for the Reds, who pushed through and saw Virgil van Dijk’s rightful chance blocked by stuntman Milan Skriniar. Goalkeeper Alisson had to intervene alertly just before half time on a dangerous cross by Hakan Çalhanoğlu.

Mo Salah had to score immediately after the coffee, but the Egyptian hit the post after a nice pass from Thiago. Inter took advantage when Lautaro Martinez kicked a mop ball against the nets: 0-1. However, two minutes later Alexis Sanchz received a second yellow card. Subsequent changes were made, but Inter kept going. Although the best chances were still for Liverpool: Salah hit the post a second time and Luis Diaz missed another unmissable opportunity.
