On the way to their first major title, RB Leipzig meets Union Berlin in the semifinals of the DFB Cup. This was the result of the draw on Sunday evening by Olympic bobsleigh champion Laura Nolte as part of the ARD sports show. In the second semi-final, the only second division team remaining in the competition has a home game: Hamburger SV welcomes SC Freiburg. The game will be played on April 20th and 21st, before the final takes place on May 21st in the traditional Berlin Olympic Stadium. Leipzig had won the second division side Hannover 96 (4-0) on Wednesday and could reach the final for the third time with a win after 2019 and 2021. For the first time in nine years, Freiburg are back in the semi-finals after their last-minute win in extra time at VfL Bochum (2-1).
HSV, who were the only semi-finalists to win the cup, also qualified in the only second division duel against Karlsruher SC (3-2 penalties), Union Berlin had already celebrated a 2-1 win against FC St. Pauli on Tuesday . The two permanent finalists Bayern Munich (second round) and Borussia Dortmund (round of 16) failed early on.
In the women’s cup, VfL Wolfsburg has to travel to champions Bayern Munich in the semi-finals on their way to a possible eighth title in a row.
