DFB Cup: HSV – Karlsruher SC – crazy victory in the penalty thriller – football

Penalties, a majority, late equalization, extra time – and advancing on penalties.

HSV wins the second division duel between Hamburger SV and Karlsruher SC in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. And that for the third time in a row in a penalty shoot-out!

HSV makes the game, falls behind, equalizes late to make it 2-2 and doesn’t manage to win extra time with a majority. But in the end they keep their nerves.

Hamburg has more possession in the first half and tries to take control of the game. But again and again ball losses lead to dangerous counterattacks by the Karlsruhe team.

In the 41st minute, Philip Heise (30) curled a free kick into the goal worth seeing. The wall was not good there.

The lead also takes a break. And then it goes very quickly.

First Karlsruhe increased to 2:0. In the 50th minute Daniel Heuer Fernandes (29) was able to defuse a deflected shot, but he was powerless against the poking by Philipp Hofmann (28).

Only two minutes later the Hamburg answer. Robert Glatzel (28) lurks at the far post and awakens the 25,000 in the stadium. Only 1:2.

HSV is pushing for an equaliser. In the 68th minute, Felix Zwayer (40) whistles a penalty – and it’s questionable. And not only that: Christoph Kobald (24) even gets yellow and red for the collision with Glatzel.

But Sonny Kittel (29) forgives the gift! The Karlsruhe goalkeeper Gersbeck holds. Now the KSC is outnumbered. And they almost manage to bring the victory over time.

But again it is Glatzel who scores. In stoppage time (90 + 1) he comes across a sharp cross in the middle and pokes the ball into the far corner. Renewal!

HSV is pushing, coach Walter’s team wants to force the decision in extra time. But despite many chances and constant running towards the Karlsruhe goal, it’s a penalty shoot-out.

At HSV, Sebastian Schonlau (27) misses, at Karlsruhe Marvin Wanitzek (28). After every three penalties, it is balanced.

Because Heuer Fernandes saved van Rhijn’s next penalty and the post got in the way of O’Shaughnessy’s shot, HSV went through in the end!
