A Veteran’s New Chapter: DJ augustin embraces the Lakers Legacy
At 34,wiht a decade of NBA experience under his belt,DJ Augustin found himself invigorated by a new possibility. The call from the Los Angeles Lakers, a franchise steeped in history and championship pedigree, ignited a spark of youthful enthusiasm within him.Leaving the houston Rockets, where he mentored a young and developing team, Augustin didn’t hesitate to join the Lakers. “The chance to be part of this franchise, to play alongside these incredible athletes, and to compete for something truly special – it’s an opportunity that doesn’t come around ofen,” he shared on his first day as a Laker. “After 14 years in the league, to experience this at this stage of my career is incredibly meaningful.”
The weight of the Lakers’ legacy wasn’t lost on Augustin. Stepping onto the court for his first practice, he was surrounded by the echoes of basketball legends. “When the Lakers call, you think about the history, the championships, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson – the list goes on,” he reflected. “It’s an opportunity any NBA player would be foolish to pass up. Looking back on my career, I knew I couldn’t let this chance slip away.”
Now, Augustin faces the challenge of contributing to the Lakers’ resurgence under the guidance of frank Vogel, his former coach in Indiana and Orlando. the task is daunting, requiring him to quickly integrate into a team striving for a turnaround.
Fortunately, Augustin’s extensive experience will be a valuable asset. “Peopel outside the league don’t realize how tough it is to be traded, to adapt to new teammates, a new coaching staff, a new city,” he explained. “Having gone through this process so many times, I feel prepared to seamlessly join this team and contribute instantly.”
He’s confident in his ability to quickly acclimate to the Lakers’ system. “These guys are incredibly smart players,” Augustin stated. “I believe that by playing my game, making smart decisions, and focusing on teamwork, I can make a positive impact.”

It’s amazing to see you sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, especially at this stage in your career. You’ve been around the league for 14 seasons, mentoring young players in Houston, and now you’re joining a team with championship aspirations. What sparked that decision?
DJ Augustin: Honestly, it was a no-brainer. The Lakers’ history speaks for itself. When that call came, it was like a wave of excitement hit me. The chance to be part of this franchise, to play alongside LeBron James, Anthony davis, these are guys I’ve watched and admired for years.It’s a dream come true.
You’ve mentioned the weight of history surrounding the Lakers, the legacy of Kobe, Magic, and all those greats. Does that add extra pressure, or does it fuel your fire?
DJ Augustin: There’s definitely a sense of responsibility that comes with wearing that purple and gold. But for me, it’s more of a motivating force. It reminds me that I’m part of something bigger than myself.these guys set a standard of excellence, and I want to contribute to that legacy.
You’ve been traded numerous times throughout your career.How do you approach integrating into a new team, especially one with such high expectations?
DJ Augustin: I’ve learned to embrace the challenge of adjusting to new environments. It’s not always easy,but I see it as an possibility to learn,grow,and build new connections. luckily, I have the experience to adapt quickly and find my role within the team.Frank Vogel, the coach, is someone I’ve worked with before. We have a good understanding of each other’s style. That familiarity definitely helps.
Your experience, your ability to make smart decisions on the court – these are qualities that could be invaluable to the Lakers’ success. What do you see as your role on this team?
DJ Augustin: My job is to be a reliable contributor, someone the team can count on for consistent playmaking and decision-making. I want to create opportunities for my teammates, whether it’s hitting open shots, facilitating the offense, or simply being a steady presence on the court.
