Dominican Republic Secures Early Spots in Santiago 2023 Pan American Games
The Dominican Republic has already secured a trio of athletes and its men’s indoor volleyball team for the upcoming XIX Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. This early qualification comes as a testament to the nation’s sporting prowess.
Gilberto García, General Secretary of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), announced the exciting news, revealing that Panam Sports officially confirmed thes guaranteed spots.
Dominican track and field stars Rosa Angelica Ramirez and Fiordaliza Cofil have earned their places after their impressive gold medal victories in the shot put and women’s 400 meters, respectively. Joining them is judoka Ariela Franchel Sánchez Benítez, who also clinched gold in her weight class.
Adding to the Dominican contingent, the men’s indoor volleyball team has also secured its berth in the Santiago 2023 Games.
García emphasized that these direct qualifications are in addition to the spots allocated through the standard classification system. He noted that weightlifting qualification is still pending, as Panam Sports is currently reviewing placements due to the revised weight categories for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will also impact the Pan American Games.
While these guaranteed spots are a significant achievement, García clarified that they do not preclude other Dominican athletes from qualifying through the regular process. The exception is the men’s indoor volleyball team, whose place is already part of the Santiago 2023 quota.
Importantly, García highlighted that if any of the directly qualified athletes are unable to participate in the Games, their spots cannot be transferred to another athlete. This policy, as outlined by Panam Sports, ensures fairness and transparency in the qualification process.
The official dialog from Panam Sports, dated March 1st, 2023, and signed by Secretary General Ivar Sisniega, confirms these exciting developments for Dominican sports.
