Euroleague Final Four Moved to Belgrade Due to COVID Restrictions

Euroleague Final Four Relocated to Belgrade Amidst Strict German COVID-19 Protocols

The highly anticipated Euroleague Final Four, originally slated for Berlin, has been moved to Belgrade, Serbia. This decision, announced by organizers on Friday, comes in response to Germany’s stringent COVID-19 health measures, which were deemed too restrictive for the prestigious basketball tournament.

Prioritizing fan attendance and player accessibility, the Euroleague organizers emphasized the importance of creating an environment where supporters could experience the event firsthand and athletes could participate freely.

“the current health regulations in Germany, if prolonged, would significantly limit the number of fans able to attend the final Four and could even prevent some players from competing,” the organizers stated. Germany’s current entry requirements mandate complete vaccination and/or a 10 to 14-day quarantine for travelers depending on their origin.

The Stark Arena in Belgrade, with a capacity of 15,000, will now host the semi-finals on May 19th, followed by the final and third-place match on May 21st. This marks a return to Belgrade for the Final four, four years after real Madrid secured their tenth title against Fenerbahçe in the Serbian capital.

Moderator: Coach, thanks for joining us. As someone deeply entrenched in the EuroLeague, what are your initial thoughts on the move to Belgrade?

Sarunas Jasikevicius: First, let me say that I understand the EuroLeague’s priority: ensuring the event is accessible to fans and players alike. It’s a shame to lose the berlin setting, but Belgrade is a fantastic basketball city, passionate about the game. The Stark Arena is splendid, and the fans there are electric.

Moderator: Absolutely, Belgrade’s basketball pedigree is undeniable. But what about the athletes? germany’s restrictions where quite stringent, potentially impacting player participation.Do you think the move will ultimately benefit the players?

Sarunas Jasikevicius: It takes away some of the uncertainty. We’ve seen sporting events disrupted significantly in the past two years due to varying protocols. Having a clearer picture and avoiding potential travel hurdles allows players to focus solely on the game.

Moderator: True, certainty is valuable in a high-pressure setting. However, some argue that relocating so close to the event date undermines preparation. Does the change in venue pose logistical challenges for teams?

Sarunas Jasikevicius: Of course, every change presents challenges, but this isn’t unprecedented. Teams are accustomed to adapting to different environments and time zones. Professional organizations like ours are equipped to handle these adjustments.

Moderator: That’s reassuring to hear. Now, looking at the bigger picture, do you anticipate any lasting impact on the EuroLeague’s future planning due to this experiance?

Sarunas Jasikevicius: I think every major international sporting organization needs flexible contingency plans now. This pandemic has highlighted vulnerabilities, and the ability to adapt quickly while prioritizing both fan engagement and athlete well-being will be crucial moving forward.
