FC Volendam suffered a defeat for the first time since August 13 of the previous calendar year. Excelsior defeated the leader of the Kitchen Champion Division within 29 minutes and eventually left the fishing village with a 2-5 victory. Pursuers FC Emmen (2-0 victory over Jong FC Utrecht) and FC Eindhoven (4-0 victory over VVV-Venlo) made no mistake and the Eindhoven team equaled a 48-year-old club record with the eighth victory in a row. NAC Breda, partly thanks to a goal from the probably departing Ralf Seuntjens, won 2-0 against De Graafschap.
FC Volendam – Excelsior 2-5
Excelsior kept house mercilessly in the KRAS Stadium from the whistle. The match had only been going on for two minutes when Kenzo Goudmijn opened the scoring. Thijs Dallinga served the wing attacker, who cut Oskar Buur out and hit the far corner. FC Volendam got away well shortly afterwards when a next goal was somewhat hesitantly canceled and goalkeeper Filip Stankovic turned a bet from Marouan Azarkan. Despite the warnings, Volendam could not prevent Excelsior from quickly taking a great distance.

Mats Wieffer served Reuven Niemeijer, who was given plenty of space to go towards the goal and hit the mark: 0-2. Three minutes later, Dallinga lifted the margin to three with his thirtieth league goal of the season: on Azarkan’s pass, his heel went into the intersection. Azarkan completed Excelsior’s whirlwind start in the 29th minute with a slider in the far corner by scoring the 0-4. Volendam had a great opportunity to do something back in the first half due to a violation by Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill on Daryl van Mieghem within the penalty area, something that Robert Mühren did not fail to do.
Wim Jonk had clearly put his team on edge in the break and that resulted in Boy Deul’s 2-4 early in the second half. It turned out to be the starting signal for an offensive by Volendam in the hunt for the connecting goal. Deul and Mühren, among others, had great opportunities, but goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel or a defender on the line saved Excelsior several times. Partly because of this, Excelsior no longer ran into problems and in injury time and Michael Chacón determined the final score in injury time at 2-5.
FC Emmen – Young FC Utrecht 2-0
FC Emmen quickly made it clear to Young FC Utrecht to De Oude Meerdijk that there was little to be gained. Thijmen Nijhuis – the goalkeeper of the Utrecht promises – was initially able to save on attempts by Ole Romeny and Miguel Araujo, but had no chance when Rui Mendes got the ball for the shot after nineteen minutes of play. Thanks to Jasin-Amin Assehnoun, FC Emmen doubled the margin before there was half an hour on the clock. FC Emmen had the necessary opportunities in the remainder of the match, via Romeny, Assehnoun and Reda Kharchouch, among others. The home team was unable to walk away, but Jong Utrecht could also be kept from scoring and the 2-0 score was therefore drawn.
FC Eindhoven – VVV-Venlo 4-0
FC Eindhoven was able to book the eighth win in a row against VVV-Venlo and thus equal a club record from 1974. Nevertheless, there seemed to be little going on for Jos Luhukay’s team after the first twenty minutes. However, when the clock showed 23, FC Eindhoven was ahead 2-0. Charles-Andreas Brym opened the score, where three minutes later Jasper Dahlhaus doubled the score with a nice free kick. Even before an hour had passed in the Jan Louwers Stadium, FC Eindhoven put an end to all hope for the visitors. VVV goalkeeper Delano van Crooij had an answer to a nice shot by Matthias Verreth, but had no chance on the rebound from Dahlhaus. The final chord was provided three minutes before the end by Jort van der Sande, who determined the final score at 4-0.
FC Dordrecht – Ajax Reserves 3-3
Because the first team of Ajax played against SC Cambuur on Friday evening, Jong Ajax had to play at De Krommedijk with a very young team. Still, the Amsterdam promises started the game better than the home team, which resulted in opportunities for Christian Rasmussen, among others, and eventually Silvano Vos’ opening goal. Kristian Hlynsson hit the post, after which the ball came back into the goal mouth. Vos managed to get the ball in the cross and thus give Young Ajax a deserved lead.
FC Dordrecht, however, completely wiped that deficit at the end of the first half, despite Ar’Jany Martha still hitting the post. Mathis Suray scored the equalizer after a quick counter, after which Alessio Miceli made it 2-1 two minutes later. That goal was made after a short consultation between the referee and the linesman, after it was concluded that there was no annoying offside in the run-up to Miceli’s goal. Due to a nice chop by Jacky Donkor, Dordrecht ran out to 3-1 shortly after the break, although Young Ajax turned out not to be completely shaken off. Rasmussen almost immediately brought the tension back and in injury time Jong Ajax with ten men – substitute Steven van der Sloot received a red card – came back to 3-3. Hlynsson gave the team of coach John Heitinga another point with a good penalty.
NAC Breda – De Graafschap 2-0
Due to injuries and corona cases among players and staff members, NAC faced significant personnel problems in the run-up to the home game against De Graafschap, where trainer Edwin de Graaf was one of the absentees. Still, the home team – where Ralf Seuntjens appeared to be playing his last game before moving to Japan – got off to a good start, as the scoreboard had already been ahead by five minutes. Ted van de Pavert headed a pass from Kaj de Rooij behind his own goalkeeper Hidde Jurjus.
The best chances then remained for NAC via Jeredy Hilterman, Gylermo Siereveld, De Rooij and Odysseus Velanas, although a bet by Jeffry Fortes was taken off the line by Seuntjens shortly after the break. With 72 minutes on the clock, NAC won the game. De Rooij got the freedom on the right side of the field and was able to get the ball in front of the goal. De Graafschap’s defense couldn’t get the ball away, so Seuntjens got the 2-0 for the shot. The attacker therefore seems to be saying goodbye to the Rat Verlegh Stadium with a goal and a 2-0 win over his old club De Graafschap.
TOP Us – Roda JC Kerkrade 1-2
After TOP Oss had missed a big chance, Roda made the first of the evening in the twentieth minute. With a corner kick, Guus Joppen was able to work the ball in a duel with goalkeeper Nolbert Alblas. TOP’s goalkeeper ended up very unhappy and had to go off the field on a stretcher, where his neck was stabilised. TOP came back in the 64th minute thanks to Stuy van den Herik, who dropped a measured cross from Yannick Leliendal on his head: 1-1. Roda still took the win thanks to Dylan Vente, who headed in twelve minutes before time from a cross from Anthony Limbombe: 1-2.
FC Den Bosch – MVV Maastricht 3-1
Den Bosch’s dramatic form – which had not won since November – was not reflected in the opening phase. With the help of Soufyan Ahannach, the Noord-Brabants took a double lead within 35 minutes. The wing striker first blazed the ball hard into the intersection and was able to pass goalkeeper Romain Matthys a little later: 2-0. Loss of ball led to MVV’s 2-1 twenty minutes after the break, which was beautifully shot into the far corner by Sven Blummel. However, Den Bosch held out and made it 3-1 in injury time thanks to a header from Mohamed Berte.
Almere City FC – Helmond Sport 3-0
Almere City has been on the rise in recent weeks and the visit from last week’s Helmond Sport was a good opportunity to continue that trend. The home team was awarded a penalty after twenty minutes, when Thijs van Leeuwen was hooked. Lance Duijvestijn sent Mike Havekotte to the wrong corner: 1-0. A dangerously inserted free kick by Duijvestijn again resulted in an own goal from Jarno Lion on the stroke of half-time: 2-0. Shortly after the break, Almere completed the job via Van Leeuwen, who came in from the left and hit the far corner: 3-0.
