Jakobsen Sprints to Victory in Windy Paris-Nice Stage
Fabio Jakobsen of Fast-Step Alpha Vinyl secured a thrilling victory in the second stage of Paris-Nice on Monday, March 7th. The Dutchman triumphed in a fiercely contested sprint finish, overcoming a challenging day marked by strong winds that fragmented the peloton.
The windy conditions fueled numerous breakaway attempts throughout the stage, keeping the peloton on edge. Despite the chaos,Christophe Laporte of Jumbo-Visma,who started the day in the leader’s jersey, skillfully navigated the turbulent race and retained his overall lead.
Jakobsen’s victory came down to a final sprint involving a select group of approximately forty riders. He outpaced Belgian champion Wout van Aert and Slovenian Luka Mezgec to claim the stage win.
As the race progresses, riders will face a more demanding challenge on Tuesday. The third stage, spanning 190.8 kilometers between Vierzon and Dun-le-Palestel, features a hilly profile in its latter half, promising a test of both strength and endurance.

Tackling the Paris-nice winds: An Exclusive Interview with Cycling Legend Sean kelly
Welcome back cycling fans! Today we’re joined by a true icon of the sport, former pro cyclist and four-time Tour de France green jersey winner, Sean Kelly! Sean, thanks for taking the time to chat with us today.
sean: Always a pleasure! It’s great to be here.
Let’s dive straight into yesterday’s thrilling stage two of Paris-Nice. Fabio Jakobsen took a fantastic win in a chaotic sprint finish, made even more challenging by those fierce winds. What was your take on the stage?
Sean: it was a classic example of how unpredictable cycling can be! Those winds really shook things up, turning the race into a bit of a lottery.Jakobsen showed incredible strength and composure to stay out of touch and come up with the win.
Absolutely. The peloton was split beyond recognition at times. Do you think the wind played a more significant role in shaping the outcome than the riders’ individual strength?
Sean: I wouldn’t say it completely overshadowed the riders’ abilities, but it definitely put a premium on positioning and tactical awareness. Riders who could judge the gusts and anticipate the breaks had a clear advantage. It’s a skill in itself, you know, reading the wind like a sailor on the open sea.
That’s a great analogy! Christophe Laporte ultimately retained his overall lead despite the chaos. He seemed to conduct his team brilliantly thru the windy conditions. What impressed you most about his performance?
Sean: Laporte is a remarkably seasoned cyclist. He seems to have an innate understanding of race dynamics. He kept his Jumbo-Visma team organized and protected, never letting himself get caught out of position. That kind of leadership and composure is invaluable in a race like this.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s stage 3, it’s a much tougher prospect with those rolling hills in the latter half. How do you see that playing out? Will we see a shakeup in the general classification?
sean:
I definitely think so. Today was more about sprinters and opportunists, but stage 3 will favor the stronger climber. Riders like Simon Yates and Tadej Pogacar could really make their mark then. We could see a significant shift in the overall standings.
That’s going to be exciting to watch! Before we wrap up, Sean, a lot of young riders look up to you as an inspiration. What advice would you give them about navigating the challenges and triumphs of a professional cycling career?
Sean: Stay dedicated, stay focused, and always believe in your abilities! It’s a tough sport, full of ups and downs, but the rewards are about much more than trophies. It’s the camaraderie, the pushing of your limits, and the sheer joy of cycling that truly matter.
Excellent words to live by! Thanks so much for taking the time with us today, Sean. It’s been a pleasure, and I know our readers will appreciate your insights.
Sean: It was my pleasure! All the best to everyone.
