Chia/Soh Withdraw from German Open Due to COVID-19
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) announced on March 7, 2022, that Malaysian men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will be unable to compete in the 2022 German Open. This unfortunate news comes after Soh Wooi Yik tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from March 8th to 13th.
Chia/Soh were considered strong contenders for the Super 300 level tournament. As the second seed, they were poised to challenge the reigning men’s doubles world champions from Japan, Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi. The German open was seen as a prime prospect for Chia/Soh to secure their first Open tournament victory.
This setback follows a recent trend of COVID-19 related withdrawals in badminton. Notably, Indian mixed doubles pair Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti were also forced to withdraw from the German Open due to a positive COVID-19 test.
The absence of Chia/Soh undoubtedly alters the landscape of the German open. Their withdrawal opens up the field for other top contenders, creating an even more competitive tournament.
