FC Schalke 04 has found a new coach. Mike Büskens will take over the Royal Blues team until the end of the season, the club announced on Monday evening. The previous assistant coach temporarily succeeds the released Dimitrios Grammozis for the remaining nine games in the 2nd division.
The 1997 UEFA Cup winner should still achieve promotion to the Bundesliga with Schalke. So far, the 53-year-old was employed as an assistant coach at the Gelsenkirchen team.

“We are very pleased that Mike Büskens has agreed to our proposal to support the club in the current phase by moving to the front row at short notice,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “We are 100 percent convinced that Buyo is the right choice for the final phase of the season.”

However, on Sunday (1.30 p.m.) Büskens may not be sitting on the bench as boss in the duel at bottom FC Ingolstadt – because he has tested positive for Corona. The training will initially be led by Matthias Kreutzer.

Grammozis had dismissed Schalke on Sunday after the 3:4 against Hansa Rostock. Schalke is sixth in the table, six points behind the promotion places, nine games are still to come. (mp/sid)
