FIFA rectifies and expels Russia from the World Cup in Qatar due to the war in Ukraine

Russia has been expelled this Monday from the World Cup in Qataraccording to an official decision taken by the FIFA Council and joined by the UEFA Executive Board, which has also excluded the Spartak of Moscow, the only Russian team still in continental competition in the Europa League. The move was taken in response to the invasion of Ukraine and at the request of several federations that refused to play against the selection of Vladimir Putin. FIFA has thus corrected its first sanction, taken on Sunday, which allowed the Russians to compete even without a flag, without anthems and playing matches as a home away from home and behind closed doors.

The Russian team had to play the second leg to qualify for one of the tres places european which are still for the Qatar World Cup 2022. His first match was scheduled for March 24 against Poland as a local. If he does, he will face the winner of the match between Sweden and the Czech Republic on March 29 again. Poles, Swedes and Czechs had refused to confront the Russians as a measure of protest against the war in Ukraine.

More negative

In addition, the federations of England, Albania, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Poland, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Sweden, France and Wales had announced before the FIFA ruling that they will not face Russia in any competition and category. This situation put the Qatar World Cup at risk in the event that Russia finally won the place.

“All Russian teams, whether national teams or clubs, have been suspended from participating in FIFA and UEFA competitions “We are fully united and in full solidarity with all those affected in Ukraine,” FIFA said in a statement. “FIFA and UEFA hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and quickly so that football can once again be a vector of unity and peace among the people.”

On the 25th and following the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, UEFA has already decided that St. Petersburg will not hold the next Champions League final on 28 May and has chosen the Paris stadium in France as its new competition venue.

UEFA, for its part, reiterated its commitment to not continue to depend on Gazprom’s sponsorship for continental competitions. “The breach of the agreement has immediate effect and covers all existing agreements, including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA national team competitions and UEFA Euro 2024,” UEFA added in a later statement. Already last week Schalke 04 removed the advertisement from the gas company from the front of his T-shirts.
