Finally, Elina Svitolina, the current 15th in the world, will make her debut at the WTA in Monterrey. The Ukrainian tennis player threatened not to play her first-round match, in which she will face Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, in protest at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
One of his biggest requests was that the neutrality of Russian athletes be recognized, a call that was joined by other of his compatriots, such as Marta Kostyuk or Lesia Tsurenko.
Finally, as Svitolina herself confirmed to a media outlet in her country, the WTA agreed to her demands and the match will be played: “The staff responsible for broadcasting the match, as well as those in the stadium, have confirmed that all flags and written attributes referring to Russia will be removed during tomorrow’s match,” Elina said.
