Flushing’s Bland playground to Undergo Major conversion
Flushing residents can look forward to a revitalized community space as the Bland Playground prepares for a year-long renovation project commencing this summer. Queens Parks Commissioner Michael Dockert announced the exciting news on March 10th at the playground, located at the intersection of 40th Road and Prince Street.
With a considerable investment of $6 million, the renovation will introduce a range of enhancements, including the installation of refreshing sprinkler facilities and brand-new play equipment. The existing basketball court will also receive a much-needed refurbishment.
This beloved playground, steeped in history, was originally transferred from the NYC Housing Authority to the New York City parks Department in 1952. It has served as a cherished gathering place for generations of Flushing families.The playground’s name pays homage to James A. Bland, a renowned African American folk songwriter and Flushing native. Born in 1854, bland achieved national acclaim for his musical compositions, earning the title of “the greatest black folk song writer in america” and “the greatest bard in the world.” His most celebrated work, “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” penned at the young age of 19, was later adopted as the state anthem of Virginia in 1940.
Bland’s musical journey took him across the Atlantic, where he resided in England and Scotland between 1882 and 1901, captivating audiences throughout Europe with his performances. He returned to the United States in 1901 and passed away in Philadelphia. In recognition of his enduring legacy,Bland was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
The playground’s namesake is further honored by the adjacent “James A. Bland house,” a testament to his significant contributions to American music and culture.
