After a collision, Georg Teigl falls unconscious to the ground. The Austria Wien footballer threatens to swallow his tongue. A courageous grip by his opponent prevents the worst. Teigl still suffers serious injuries.
For Georg Teigl, a football game almost ended fatally. The former FC Augsburg professional suffered a serious head injury in a collision with an opponent in the home game of FK Austria Wien. But there is no danger to life, the club announced on Monday.
Accordingly, Teigl suffered a skull fracture, a zygomatic arch fracture and a broken jaw in the game against Wolfsberger AC (1-0) on Sunday evening. According to the club, an operation is not necessary from the current point of view.
The 31-year-old Austrian is doing well given the circumstances. He is currently being treated in a Vienna hospital. FK Austria Wien thanked the opposing players who “recognized the situation immediately and provided first aid”. Because without the intervention of Wolfsberger, the accident would have been much worse.
Luka Lochoshvili had put his hand in Teigl’s mouth and uncovered the airways when he was lying on the ground unconscious and with his tongue apparently swallowed. “I just saw him lying there. I just walked over and saw his eyes outside. I have some experience with situations like this,” the Georgian told Sky Austria.
Lochoshvili reacts with quick-wittedness
“I opened his mouth and I think I pulled his tongue out at the last second. Thank god he made it. The most important thing is that his life is saved,” Lochoshvili stressed.
On Instagram, Teigl’s wife Karin thanked her husband’s lifesaver: “So much love and strength comes in. Thank you thank you thank you! We simply have the best guardian angels in the world, let me tell you that! And the worst lifesaver! Beyond thankful!
Teigl has been under contract with Austria Vienna since 2020. Before that he was active in Germany for many years, playing for RB Leipzig, Eintracht Braunschweig and FC Augsburg. He played 27 games in the Bundesliga for Augsburg.
