Former basketball players have formed a group called Coalition des Grandes Sœurs du sport. They intend to unite their voices to denounce the abuse of power and the culture of silence in sport.
Their facebook group was formed following the arrest of three basketball coaches at Saint-Laurent High School. Several articles in the media have reported a culture of silence around the school’s basketball program.
“We could not remain motionless in the face of this scourge which goes beyond the limits of our sport”, says one in the description of the group.
Their raison d’être is to “support young female athletes, protect them and ask for clear commitments from the sports, educational and political institutions of Quebec to finally practice competitive sport in a healthy way, with trained, competent and benevolent coaches”.
The group has more than 400 members and is accessible via the Facebook social network.
