Former NHL Star Dmitri Khristich Pleads for Help as War Ravages Ukraine

## A Ukrainian Hockey Star’s Plea for help Amidst War

Former NHL player Dmitri Khristich, known for his time with the Washington Capitals alongside Jaromír Jágr, finds himself on the front lines of a different kind of battle. Currently residing in Poltava, approximately 300 kilometers southeast of Kyiv, Khristich is witnessing the devastating impact of the ongoing Russian invasion firsthand.[1]

While his 15-year-old son sought refuge in Poland, Khristich remains steadfast in his commitment to protect his homeland. He expresses a profound sense of despair, stating that the war’s reach extends far beyond the immediate conflict zones. “Everywhere – east, south, north – there is war,” he laments. “It doesn’t matter if we are safe, as the rest of the country is not safe.” [2]

Khristich’s frustration extends to the international community’s response. He questions the West’s inaction, stating, “We are just looking at the news and we do not understand why the West is just sitting and watching the Russians destroy Ukraine. It’s unbelievable.” He believes that economic sanctions alone are insufficient to halt the Russian advance and pleads for more direct intervention, declaring, “We need help, real help. You will let us be killed here.” [3]

Khristich’s story is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war. As of January 2025, the conflict in Ukraine has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and millions of displaced individuals. The international community continues to grapple with the complexities of the situation, searching for a path towards a peaceful resolution.

A Hockey Legend’s Plea: An Exclusive Interview with Dmitri Khristich

Dmitri Khristich, the former NHL star who captivated Capitals fans alongside the likes of Jaromír Jágr, finds himself engaged in a battle far removed from the ice rink.

Today, we’re joined by Mr. Khristich himself, who courageously chose to remain in his Ukrainian homeland amidst the devastating Russian invasion. Dmitri, thank you for joining us.

Dmitri khristich: Thank you for having me.

Moderator: Your story is one of both heartbreaking bravery and impassioned frustration. You’ve spoken about the relentlessness of the war, its reach extending far beyond the conflict zones. Can you tell our readers what life is like in Poltava these days?

Dmitri Khristich: It’s… it’s a struggle every single day. The air raid sirens are our unwelcome alarm clock. You never know when danger might strike. And the fear, the constant gnawing fear, it hangs over everything. But even with that weight, we cling to hope. We are fighting for our homes, our families, our very existence.

Moderator: You’ve also expressed deep disappointment with the international community’s response, especially the inaction of the West. Can you elaborate on that?

Dmitri Khristich: We look to the West for leadership, for support. We see the sanctions, but they are not enough. Russia continues its brutal assault on our people. We hear their words of support, but where are the actions that will truly make a difference? Do they just want to watch us be destroyed?

Moderator: Your words are powerful, Dmitri, and undoubtedly shared by many ukrainians. What message do you have for the world? What can people do to help?

Dmitri Khristich: We need more than words. We need real help. We need weapons to defend ourselves, humanitarian aid for the countless displaced, and strong, decisive action from the international community. Don’t let us be forgotten. Don’t let us be casualties of apathy and inaction.

Moderator: This is a deeply moving and complex situation. I commend your bravery and your willingness to speak out. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope endures.

We now open the floor to our readers. What are your thoughts on Dmitri Khristich’s plea? How can we, as a global community, better support the people of Ukraine?
