Former Ukrainian soccer star Anatoliy Tymoshchuk is banned for life for failing to take a stand against Russia

Ukraine record holder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk has been banned from football in his country for refusing to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and failing to resign from his position as assistant coach of the Russian club Zenit Saint-Petersburg. Former captain of the Ukraine national football team, Tymoshchuk, 42, has been banned for life in Ukraine, the national football federation announced on Friday.

Tymoshchuk will have his license removed and his name erased from the Ukrainian football honors list. The Ukrainian football federation added that it would ask the government of Ukraine to withdraw the awards received during his career which saw the midfielder, 144 times international between 2000 and 2016, play at Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayern of Munich and at the Zenith Saint-Petersburg, where he has been on the staff since 2017.
