New League, New Rivalries: A Look at teh BNXT League with coach Tom

Welcome back, hoops fans! I’m thrilled too have legendary coach TomVandermeer with us today to discuss the much-anticipated launch of the BNXT League. Coach Vandermeer, your career spans decades, witnessing the evolution of European basketball. What are your initial thoughts on this new collaboration between Belgium and the Netherlands?

Tom Vandermeer: Thanks for having me. I think this is a fantastic step for basketball in both countries. Combining the talent pools of Belgium and the netherlands is a recipe for exciting, competitive basketball. We’ve always seen glimpses of individual brilliance from these nations, but now, we have the chance to witness it on a larger stage, fostering deeper rivalries and pushing players to elevate their game.

That’s exactly what caught my eye about this initial weekend. Matchups like Mechelen against Leiden and Bergen versus Den Bosch have the potential to be instant classics, right?

Tom Vandermeer: Absolutely! I love the way the schedule is set up. Those early games will set the tone. Mechelen, with their strong history, will want to make a statement instantly, but Leiden is a team on the rise, eager to prove themselves.

And you mentioned the Bergen-Den Bosch showdown. That’s a rivalry steeped in history and always delivers intensity.

Tom Vandermeer: Precisely! These are the kind of matchups that draw fans in and create a buzz around the league. It’s not just about the talent on the court; it’s about the passion, the drama, and the bragging rights.

I want to touch upon a couple more teams. Many are saying Antwerp, the “giants” of Belgian basketball, will dominate the league. Do you agree?

Tom Vandermeer: While Antwerp is undoubtedly a powerhouse, the BNXT League is a fresh start for everyone. We’ve seen teams rise and fall in the past. The Landstede Hammers, for example, have a lot of potential and could give Antwerp a run for their money.

What about Oostende and their high-octane offense? Do you think they can keep up that pace against teams like Groningen?

Tom Vandermeer: Oostende’s style is electrifying, there’s no doubt whatsoever about it. But Groningen’s defense is nothing to scoff at. This matchup will be a fascinating battle between offense and defense.
