From Stroke to Basketball: Selvi Kılcılar’s Inspiring Journey of Resilience

At just 23 years old, Selvi Kılcılar underwent gallbladder surgery, a procedure that would change her life forever. Unfortunately, she contracted an infection during the process, which led to a stroke. Despite being paralyzed and having her dream of becoming a police officer shattered, Kılcılar refused to let adversity define her. A decade ago, she discovered a new passion in sports, which became her path to overcoming challenges.

Her journey began when she joined a course offered by the Iskenderun handicapped basketball Team. Kılcılar quickly excelled, showcasing her talent and determination. Beyond basketball, she also creates amigurumi knitted dolls,a craft she uses to support her household income. These handmade creations are sold at her clubhouse, blending her artistic skills with her athletic pursuits.

‘DISABILITY IS NOT A LIMITATION’

Kılcılar has set her sights on joining the national team and dreams of competing in a European basketball championship. Her love for the sport is evident in her words and actions. “I became disabled after a stroke at 23. Initially, I was just a spectator, but I quickly fell in love with basketball. After my disability,I chose not to stay at home or give in to pessimism. Instead, I stepped onto the court as an athlete. The support from my community, my team president, and my fellow athletes has been amazing. It brings me immense joy,and I plan to continue playing this sport I adore for as long as I can,” she shared.

Basketball has become my lifeline, helping me hold onto life with all my might. I want to play until my last breath and experience the thrill of championships. To others with disabilities, I say: Don’t stay at home.Keep fighting, as life is truly worth living,” Kılcılar emphasized.
