Frustrated Rory McIlroy breaks his sandwedge and berates Bay Hill course prep – Arnold Palmer Invitational

Leading the evening of the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational Rory McIlroy finished the tournament in a disappointing 13th place on Sunday. Fleeed by success this weekend, he returned two cards of 76 which left him with a bitter taste and attacked the organizers who, according to him, were guilty of making the course too penalizing.

The good thing about Rory McIlroy is that even when things don’t turn out in his favor, he comes face to face with reporters and comes clean. New illustration this Sunday at Bay Hill after a second consecutive card of 69 which relegates him beyond 10th place when he was among the favorites at mid-tournament.

“I’m stunned, frustrated. It’s a “copy-paste” of what I’ve done here in previous years. It’s been 3 consecutive years that I started the tournament well with a 65 or a 66 and that the weekend the conditions are so penalizing that I drop irreparably in the classification. It’s hard to keep your patience.”

They’re going to have to do something. A lot of players don’t come here anymore.

After having tore his polo shirt in rage at the exit of the recording during the Dubai final at the end of NovemberRory couldn’t contain his nerves on the 12th after chipping from the rough off the green and snapping his sandwedge in half in rage.

“They’re going to have to do something. A lot of players don’t come here anymore. I have nothing against penalizing courses but even there the good shots are not rewarded. I certainly played a lot better than my +8 score this weekend would indicate. I need a day off, to forget all that and focus on the Players.

Rory McIlroy will indeed have to very quickly digest this frustration in order to present himself in better conditions at the start of the Players Championship which he considers very close to the major events and which he won in 2019.

“The Players is such a big tournament with the prize pool at 20 million dollars. The majors are sacred but he is really very close. he concluded.
