it’s a common human tendency to overlook one’s own flaws while criticizing others. this scenario unfolded recently in Argentina, were Marcelo Gallardo, the celebrated coach of River Plate, addressed a question about the jeers directed at Lionel Messi by paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fans. This came after River Plate’s dominant 4-0 win over Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata.
Gallardo, who enjoyed a prosperous playing career in France, including a stint with PSG, is well-acquainted with the passionate and sometimes unforgiving nature of French football supporters. His insights into the situation carry weight, given his firsthand experience with the club and its fanbase.
The backlash against Messi in Paris has sparked outrage in Argentina, where the football icon is revered. many PSG supporters blame Messi for the team’s recent Champions League exit. Though, in his homeland, Messi is celebrated as a hero, especially after leading Argentina to victory in the 2021 copa América. Fans are now hopeful he can deliver a World Cup triumph in Qatar later this year.
Gallardo’s response to the controversy, though, took many by surprise. He reminded everyone that Messi has faced similar criticism in Argentina, particularly during a challenging period before his temporary retirement from the national team. “We’ve also been harsh on Messi,” Gallardo stated. “Let’s not pretend otherwise. Thankfully, he reconsidered and returned to the team. We should remember that.”
While gallardo acknowledged the fans’ right to express thier frustrations, he made it clear that he doesn’t condone such behavior. “I understand that football culture varies across regions, and fans have their ways of showing disappointment.I don’t agree with it, but it’s not something that shocks me in the world of football,” he added.
Gallardo was asked about Messi’s whistles at PSG and he replied: “We mistreat him a lot too. Now let’s not play patriotic. I don’t share it at all.” pic.twitter.com/V4nGPAtUxD
