From Mountain Peaks to business Summits: The Unstoppable Rise of guerlain Chicherit
Guerlain Chicherit, a name synonymous with alpine freeride, is far from a reckless daredevil. While his youthful leap from an eighth-story building into powdery snow might suggest otherwise, this Tignes native approaches every descent with meticulous planning, acutely aware of the inherent risks. From his 2000 world championship title to his current success as an entrepreneur, Chicherit has consistently demonstrated a remarkable dedication to his passions.
His hotel group,De Savoie, exemplifies this unwavering commitment.Employing over a thousand individuals and generating €60 million in revenue, the company boasts an impressive portfolio. Nestled in high-altitude resorts, De Savoie manages around twenty chalets, as many hotels, and approximately ten eco-pleasant residences.Adding to this impressive roster, Chicherit recently partnered with rapper Orelsan to open Le Strike concert hall in Tignes on February 16th.
Chicherit’s journey is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of sport. Orphaned at a young age, he found solace and direction on the slopes. His mother, working tirelessly to provide for him, introduced him to skiing at the tender age of two, followed by judo lessons at ten.
Skiing ignited a passion within him, fueling his ambition to become world champion. Judo, where he achieved national champion status, instilled discipline and focus.”Sport kept me on the right track during my adolescence,” he reflects, his tone tinged with amusement, acknowledging the boundless energy he channeled into extraordinary achievements. “School wasn’t really my forte.”
On the snow, though, he excelled. At just 19, he clinched his first freeride world championship title. this prodigious talent, who describes himself as a “hard worker,” quickly secured a partnership with ski brand Dynastar.”When you finally receive funding, the temptation is to rest on your laurels,” he cautions. “But you must persevere. The real challenge begins when you strive to replicate your successes.”
In 2003, Chicherit’s competitive spirit led him to car racing. His debut with Citroën was marked by both impressive performances and a fair share of crashes. “I lacked technique, but I was incredibly fast,” he explains. After a series of accidents, Citroën parted ways with him. Undeterred, Chicherit continued his racing career with BMW, participating in international rallies and multiple Dakar races.
In 2007, despite a neck injury sustained in a rally accident, he secured his fourth freeride world championship title. Two years later,he added the world championship in cross-country rallies to his impressive list of achievements.
It was then that Chicherit, now a father of three, turned his attention to real estate. He built his first chalet with the help of friends, envisioning it as a rental property. The chalet was recognized as the “Most lovely Chalet in the World” at the 2014 World Ski Awards. Encouraged by this success, he built another, and the rest, as they say, is history.
“I’ve known Guerlain as he was 17,” says Bernard Liatti, his former employer at Dynastar and now general manager of De Savoie. “He’s a dedicated, loyal individual who relentlessly pursues his dreams. In both sports and business,he has always been a visionary. His foresight led him to invest in high-altitude resorts, anticipating the impact of climate change.”
Chicherit’s story is far from over. After conquering mountain peaks and racing tracks, he is now making his mark in the world of business, revitalizing mountain resorts. And just like on the slopes and the racetrack, he is steadfast to achieve victory once again.
