First Werder defeat for Werner!
After ten games without bankruptcy (9 wins, one draw), Ole Werner (33) conceded his first defeat as a Werder coach in the top game in the second division in Heidenheim (1:2). Striker Christian Kühlwetter and Stefan Schimmer put the home team back on the road to success.
Werner: “We didn’t lose undeservedly. We lacked clarity today. That was certainly also due to one or the other short-term changeover.”
There was already bad news for Werder before kick-off: Captain Ömer Toprak suffered a muscle injury in his calf in the final training session – Lasse Mai, on loan from Bayern, has replaced him in the starting eleven. Mai didn’t use the starting eleven chance! Again and again he looks unhappy – he is substituted at half-time.
Heidenheim got off to a lightning start. Mohr (2nd) and Schöppner (9th) have big chances right at the start. Werder countered well, but missed clear chances to take the lead with a shot from the post by substitute captain Bittencourt (17′) and a header from a filling jug.
38 minutes: After defender Friedl had to go out with a pelvic injury, Heidenheim struck in the middle of Werder’s urgent phase: Christian Kühlwetter circled the ball from around 25 meters into the far corner. No chance for keeper Pavlenka to prevent the deficit.
The second round starts evenly until Werder defender Jung (63rd) seals the first Werner defeat himself: Jung plays a serious bad pass to cooling weather. He finds shimmer and the scorer pushes in for a preliminary decision.
Even a worth seeing free-kick goal by Marvin Ducksch to make it 1:2 (89th) after a nasty kick from Heidenheims Busch against Woltemade (red card) can no longer save Bremen.
Bitter for Werder: The direct competitors from Darmstadt and St. Pauli dropped points – neither managed to get beyond a draw. Werder is still only on a relegation place…
