A Breath of Fresh Air on the Court: An Exclusive Interview with Pierre-hugues Herbert

Welcome back, tennis fans! Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with a talented French player making waves both on and off the court. Pierre-Hugues Herbert, currently ranked 109th in the world, has recently spoken out about the lifting of France’s vaccination pass, a welcome change for him and many other athletes. Pierre-Hugues, thanks for joining us.

PH: Thanks for having me!

Let’s jump right in. You’ve been vocal about your relief regarding the end of the vaccination pass mandate. Can you tell us what this means for you personally and professionally?

PH: Of course. I think, for me, it’s a sense of normalcy returning.

The past few years have been incredibly arduous for everyone, and athletes are no exception.

The uncertainty surrounding travel restrictions, quarantines, and constantly shifting regulations created a lot of stress and anxiety. Now, with the pass lifted, it feels like we can finally focus on what we do best: playing tennis.

Moderator: You’ve mentioned the mental toll this situation has taken on athletes. Do you think the sporting world, especially tennis, was adequately supported during this time?

PH: I think there was support, but it was often fragmented.

Different countries had different rules, making it very difficult to plan tournaments and travel schedules.

It would have been beneficial to have a more unified approach, clear guidelines that could provide stability for players.

Moderator: We saw a lot of debate around this issue, with unvaccinated players like yourself facing scrutiny and even exclusion from tournaments. Do you feel that unvaccinated athletes were treated fairly during this period?

PH: That’s a complex question.

I understand the need for precautions and public health measures.

Tho, I also believe in individual choice and the right to make decisions about one’s own body.

Ultimately, I feel that a dialog, a real conversation about finding the best solutions for everyone, was lacking.

Moderator: Looking forward, what are your hopes for the future of professional tennis?

PH: Firstly, I hope we can put this pandemic behind us and return to a sense of pre-pandemic normalcy.

I’m also hopeful that we can learn from this experience and improve the way we handle global health crises in the future, ensuring that the well-being of athletes is prioritized.

And, of course, I’m hoping for a accomplished run at Roland-Garros this year!

Moderator: We’ll be cheering for you, Pierre-Hugues! thanks for your candid and thought-provoking insights.
