Born in Angelópolis, Antioquia, but raised in Caldas, 64-year-old Hernán Darío “El Arriero” Herrera embodies the spirit of Colombian football. His journey began humbly, honing his skills by kicking makeshift balls in the fields of his youth.

By the age of 15, Herrera’s talent was undeniable. He earned a spot on the Colombian National youth team in 1975 and made his professional debut just eight months later. He quickly established himself as a key player, becoming a regular starter in 1977 and contributing too championship victories in 1976 and 1981.

Those who witnessed Herrera’s playing days recall his exceptional technical prowess and ball control,initially showcasing his talents as an attacking midfielder.Herrera’s transition to coaching began in 1999 with Real Cartagena, a second-division Colombian team. He instantly made his mark, leading them to victory that same year and repeating the feat in 2004. His coaching career also included stints with América de Cali and Pasto.

Currently, Herrera serves as a strategist within Atlético Nacional’s youth progress program. However, he’s no stranger to the pressures of leading the senior team.In 2018, following the departure of Argentine coach Jorge Almirón, Herrera stepped in and guided Atlético Nacional to victory in the Copa Colombia.

Herrera: “It feels amazing. Atlético Nacional is more than just a club to me; it’s family. The warmth of the fans, the passion within the locker room, the legacy that echoes through the atanasio Girardot stadium – it all stirs something deep within my soul. And, of course, this club gave me so much as a player. To be back as coach, guiding a new generation, feels like coming full circle. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

Speaking of that legacy, you and atlético nacional have tasted triumph before, most notably in the Copa Colombia in 2018. Now,you stand before a new challenge: reversing the team’s fortunes in the Copa Libertadores against Olimpia. What are your thoughts going into this crucial game?

Herrera: “olimpia is a strong opponent. We know what they’re capable of, and the atmosphere in Asunción will be electric. However, we’re atlético Nacional. We have a rich history, a passionate fanbase, and a squad capable of playing with the best. We’re going there to battle, to impose our style of play, and, ultimately, to secure a victory that will propel us forward in this tournament.”

Your coaching beliefs, one built on technical prowess, ball control, and attacking flair, has been widely praised. Do you see that same spirit manifested in this current generation of Atlético Nacional players?

Herrera: “(Smiles) Every generation is different. But the hunger, the fire in their eyes, that’s the same.They’re eager to learn, to improve, and to make their mark on this club. We have exciting talent in this squad, players with the potential to be future stars. My job is to guide them, to nurture their talent, and to instill in them the same passion and fighting spirit that has defined Atlético Nacional for generations.”

herrera: “To our loyal fans, I say this: believe. We are Atlético Nacional.
