Alisa Kovalenko‘s documentary, Home games, captures Alina’s journey, offering a poignant glimpse into the lives of ordinary Ukrainians facing remarkable challenges. The film, available on Netflix since December 2021, was Ukraine’s first documentary to grace the platform. this poignant timing,coinciding with the Russian invasion in February 2022,adds a layer of heartbreaking relevance to Alina’s story.

Home Games transcends the realm of sports,delving into the heart of a family struggling against adversity. Alina, orphaned at a young age, assumes the role of caregiver for her younger half-siblings, Renat and Regina. Their cramped apartment becomes a stage for both hardship and hope.

Alina’s evenings are spent not in glamorous celebrations, but in the mundane realities of domestic life. She cleans, cooks, and tells her siblings a reimagined Cinderella story, where the princess trades glass slippers for football cleats. This poignant juxtaposition highlights the stark contrast between Alina’s aspirations and the harsh realities she faces.

The film’s power lies in its intimate portrayal of Alina’s unwavering spirit. Despite the overwhelming obstacles, she clings to her dream of playing for the national team. Home Games premiered at the Fipadoc Biarritz festival in 2019 and was co-produced by Valentyn Vasyanovych, director of the acclaimed Reflection. The film offers a fresh viewpoint on Ukraine, showcasing the country’s resilience and the indomitable spirit of its peopel.Kovalenko, currently working on a teenage adventure film set near Luhansk, found herself trapped in the Donbass region when the conflict escalated. Her experience adds a chilling dimension to Home Games,underscoring the fragility of peace and the devastating impact of war.

Alina’s simple wish, expressed in the film, resonates with newfound urgency: “I want to live like normal people.” This plea for normalcy, for a life free from the shadow of conflict, speaks volumes about the human cost of war and the enduring hope for a brighter future.

Andriy, whose stellar career saw him become a household name across Europe, is no stranger to the challenges and triumphs of pursuing a dream in the face of adversity. We are here to discuss “Home Games,” a powerful documentary that illuminates the realities of a young Ukrainian footballer, Alina Shilova, balancing her aspirations with the harsh realities of poverty and, more recently, the shadow of war.

Andriy, “Home Games” paints a stark but poignant picture of Alina’s life. How do you relate to her story?

“Alina’s story resonates deeply with me. I grew up in a working-class family, and football was my escape, my dream. I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my family made to support my aspirations. Alina’s dedication to her family, while chasing her own goals, truly embodies the Ukrainian spirit – resilience in the face of adversity is in our DNA.The war,of course,adds a heartbreaking dimension to her tale,but Alina’s unwavering determination despite the chaos is truly inspiring.”

Alina’s talent is undeniable, yet she faces a constant struggle between pursuing her dream and fulfilling her family responsibilities. How did you navigate those challenges in your own career?

“Balancing personal ambition with family obligations is a difficult act for any athlete. In my early days, my parents made tremendous sacrifices to ensure I trained and competed. It wasn’t always easy. There where times when I felt torn, wanting to be there for my family but compelled to chase my dreams. But they always encouraged me, reminding me that by pursuing my passion, I was also creating a better future for us all. Alina’s situation is even more complex, but I admire her strength and commitment to both her family and her football.”

The film premieres at a tragic juncture in Ukraine’s history, as the ongoing war casts a long shadow over the contry. How do you think “Home Games” can contribute to the global understanding of the challenges Ukrainians face?”

““Home Games” is more than just a sports documentary. It is indeed a story about hope, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of Ukrainians. Alina’s story, set against the backdrop of a nation fighting for its survival, showcases the human cost of conflict. It humanizes the situation, allowing audiences to connect with the daily struggles faced by ordinary Ukrainians.

I beleive this film can bridge cultural divides, fostering empathy and understanding. It reminds the world that even amidst adversity, the human spirit endures. Ukrainians continue to dream, to hope, and to fight for a brighter future.”

Alina expresses a simple yet profound wish – to live a normal life. how do you see her story inspiring young athletes in Ukraine and around the world?

“Alina’s journey is a powerful reminder that dreams are worth fighting for.Her story transcends borders and sports. It is a testament to the power of perseverance, family, and the human spirit’s capacity for hope.

For young athletes in Ukraine, Alina embodies the possibility of achieving your dreams even amidst great challenges. Her story is a light in the darkness, a symbol of resilience and inspiration. For young athletes worldwide, Alina’s story teaches us that the path to achieving our dreams is rarely easy, and often involves sacrifices. “Never give up on your dreams. Embrace the challenges, lean on your support system, and never lose sight of the fire that burns within you. Remember that hardship can forge resilience, and your story has the power to inspire others.Believe in yourself, keep pushing forward, and know that even in the darkest of times, hope prevails.”
