Homeless: Los Angeles Dogers sign Andrew Toles contract

The Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team shows great compassion in dealing with their ex-player. A former exceptional talent has been given a new contract, although he will not play another game for the club due to illness. His story is tragic.

The man who police discovered asleep behind a concourse at Key West Airport in June 2020 was no stranger. Andrew Toles had made his mark as a pro baseball player, most notably in 2016 when he had what manager Dave Roberts called a “dream” season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

From then on it went downhill. Toles (29) suffered a cruciate ligament rupture, the year 2017 was over. A year later, after spending two weeks in a psychiatric institution because of repeated mental problems, Toles received the horrific diagnosis: he has schizophrenia.

Between hospitals and homelessness

From then on, the life of the so talented baseball professional got out of hand. As of mid-2019, he drifted back and forth between hospitals and homeless shelters. After the Key West police let him go, his father Alvin accidentally found him in West Palm Beach, Florida in December 2020.

Alvin Toles, former football pro for the New Orleans Saints, brought his seriously ill son home to Georgia, in November he was given guardianship, he cares around the clock. It’s tough, he told USA Today, that his son doesn’t even understand that the Dodgers won the 2020 World Series.

The Dodgers, in turn, haven’t forgotten about Toles. They’ve had him on their restricted list since March 2019, so he’s always been a part of it. Now they gave him a new contract – at the league minimum salary of $700,000. That means: Toles is entitled to health insurance. And his father can pay the bills. (sid/jvd)
