Medvedev Cruises Past Machac in Indian Wells Debut
Reigning ATP World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev made a commanding start to his Indian Wells campaign, dispatching Czech qualifier Tomas Machac in straight sets. The Russian, who ascended to the top spot just two weeks ago after dethroning Novak Djokovic, showcased his dominance with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in a brisk one hour and twelve minutes.
Despite facing an early break point in the opening game, Medvedev quickly neutralized the threat. Machac, who had battled thru qualifying rounds and was facing the US Open champion for the first time, struggled to find his footing against Medvedev’s relentless pressure.
Capitalizing on his first break point opportunity in the sixth game, Medvedev seized control of the set. He closed out the opening frame with authority, converting his first set point.
Medvedev’s dominance continued unabated in the second set. He secured two more breaks, in the first and fifth games, effectively dismantling Machac’s resistance. The Russian’s powerful serve proved particularly effective, winning a remarkable 77% of points compared to Machac’s 52%.
This convincing win marks Medvedev’s first appearance in the Round of 32 at Indian Wells, a tournament where he has yet to surpass the Round of 16. He will next face the victor of the match between Frenchman Gael Monfils and serbian Filip Krajinovic.
