Bubka, a former world record holder in pole vaulting, will spearhead the IOC’s efforts from Lausanne, Switzerland. “The IOC has urgently requested Mr. bubka to come immediately to Lausanne to coordinate all elements of humanitarian assistance to the ukrainian Olympic Community,” Bach stated in a recent declaration. “With the support of Olympic Solidarity in Lausanne and his team, Mr. Bubka will lead the allocation and distribution of the solidarity fund to the Ukrainian Olympic community and the sports movement.”
Bubka, a prominent figure in ukrainian sports, transitioned from a decorated athlete representing the Soviet Union to a leader within the newly autonomous nation’s Olympic movement. A Champion’s Stand: Natalia Dobrynska on the IOC’s Support for Ukrainian Athletes
as the world grapples with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the global community continues to rally around those affected, including the nation’s athletes. Today, we’re joined by Olympic gold medalist and Ukrainian heptathlete Natalia Dobrynska to discuss the recent initiatives by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aimed at providing humanitarian aid and support to Ukrainian athletes.
Natalia, thank you for joining us during this critical time.
Natalia Dobrynska: Thanks for having me.It means a lot to have this platform to talk about what’s happening in Ukraine and how the sporting community is responding.
The IOC has been speedy to mobilize, with President Thomas Bach personally reaching out to Sergei Bubka,a legend in ukrainian athletics,to spearhead their efforts.
Having someone like Sergei Bubka, a former world record holder and respected figure within the Ukrainian Olympic community, at the helm of this initiative is truly inspiring. What are your thoughts on his appointment, and do you believe it will be instrumental in ensuring aid reaches those who need it most?
Natalia Dobrynska: Absolutely. Sergei is a true leader and inspiration for all Ukrainian athletes. He understands the challenges we face, and his voice carries weight both within Ukraine and internationally.Having him coordinate the IOC’s efforts gives us confidence that the aid will be distributed effectively and transparently. It’s a powerful message of solidarity from the global sporting community.
The IOC has committed to utilizing the Olympic Solidarity program to provide financial support to the Ukrainian Olympic movement and the broader sports sector. This is a crucial step,as many athletes have been displaced, training facilities have been disrupted, and the overall future of Ukrainian sport is uncertain.
Considering the current circumstances, what kind of impact do you think this financial aid will have on Ukrainian athletes?
Natalia Dobrynska: It will be invaluable. For many athletes, the focus right now is on survival, not sports. This aid will provide essential resources, allowing them to access basic necessities, find temporary accommodation, and hopefully, gradually return to training. It’s about providing stability and hope during a tremendously arduous time.
The IOC’s response is a testament to the power of sport to unite and offer support during times of crisis. Do you believe this initiative will extend beyond financial aid in the long run, perhaps contributing to the reconstruction and revitalization of the Ukrainian sports infrastructure?
