Battling Back to the Top: A Conversation with Judo Coach Bodo Manthey

This week on the Sports Digest, we’re diving deep into the world of competitive judo with Coach Bodo manthey, whose two protégés, Werner and Iskam, recently earned coveted spots in the upcoming West German Championship. Coach Manthey, welcome to the show.

Bodo Manthey: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss the sport I love.

Let’s start with the obvious – two qualifiers for the west German Championship is a fantastic achievement! How do you feel about your judoka’s performance in the qualifying tournament?

bodo Manthey: I’m incredibly proud of both Werner and Iskam. They showed true grit and determination throughout the tournament. Of course, there were some bumps along the way, but that’s the nature of competitive judo.

You mentioned some “bumps.” We understand Werner faced some tough competition, experiencing both wins and losses. How do you think these setbacks ultimately impacted his performance?

Bodo Manthey: Every bout, win or lose, is a learning prospect. Werner’s losses, while frustrating, highlighted certain areas where he needed to improve. He’s a quick learner and bounced back strong, securing those crucial wins with some brilliant technique.

iskam, on the other hand, seemed almost unstoppable until the finals. What happened there?

Bodo Manthey: Iskam’s semifinal performance was extraordinary. He dominated his opponent with those textbook shoulder throws. However, the final showcased the unpredictable nature of judo. His opponent employed a very unorthodox style, something Iskam wasn’t quite prepared for.

While we analyze techniques and strategies, the element of surprise can quickly shift the balance in judo, can’t it?

Bodo Manthey: Absolutely. that’s what makes judo so fascinating. It’s a constant chess match, adapting to your opponent’s moves while executing your own game plan.

There’s also been a lot of talk about the lingering effects of the pandemic on athletes’ training. As someone who’s witnessed these challenges firsthand, what’s your viewpoint?

bodo Manthey: It’s undeniable that the pandemic threw a wrench in everyone’s training routine. We had prolonged gym closures, limited sparring opportunities, and the psychological toll of navigating a global crisis. Some athletes have bounced back quicker than others. We’re still working on regaining that pre-pandemic level of preparedness, but we’re getting there.

It’s a testament to the dedication of these athletes that they’ve managed to succeed despite such obstacles. Looking ahead to the West German Championship, what are your expectations for Werner and Iskam?

Bodo Manthey: Both athletes are eager to prove themselves on this big stage. My expectations are simple: fight with heart, execute your training, and leave everything on the mat.The results will take care of themselves.

Well said, Coach. We’re sure they will make us proud.
