After a season at the helm of RB Leipzig, American coach Jesse Marsch was appointed Monday at the head of Leeds United, where he succeeds the Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa, sacked the day before, announced the English club.
Aged 48, the former head coach of the Montreal Impact will have the task of avoiding relegation, since Leeds are only two points from the red zone.
His arrival, until June 2025, is “awaiting international authorization”, specifies the club in a press release.
“We are delighted to welcome Jesse to the club and are delighted that he will lead us into this new chapter,” said sporting director Victor Orta. Jesse is someone we identified several years ago during his time at Red Bulls Salzburg and we believe his philosophy and style of play aligns with that of the club and will suit the players very well.
“We have a long-term plan and strongly believe he can take Leeds United to the next level. We are excited about what the future holds.”
Marsch will take charge of his first Premier League game this Saturday at Leicester City.
A former American international midfielder, he previously played for DC United, Chicago Fire and Chivas USA in MLS.
After retiring from playing, he became an assistant for the United States national team, before being named the Impact’s first head coach in 2012.
