Miami, United States | Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Derek Jeter abruptly resigned as CEO of the Miami Marlins on Monday, citing differences over the club’s management as the reason for his departure.
The 47-year-old New York Yankees icon was part of the ownership group that bought the Marlins for $1.2 billion in 2017 and later took over as CEO.
Jeter, who had a 4% stake in the franchise, also said he was dumping his shares in the club.
“Today I announce that the Miami Marlins and I have officially ended our relationship and I will no longer be the executive director or shareholder of the club,” said the former captain of the New York club.
“We had a vision five years ago to change the Marlins franchise, and as CEO [presidente ejecutivo]I am proud to have put my name and reputation on the line to make our plan a reality.”
“That said, the vision for the future of the franchise is different from the one I’ve pledged to lead. Now is the right time for me to step aside as a new season begins.”
Jeter’s decision comes amid a work stoppage over a dispute between Major League Baseball (MLB) and the players over a new deal for next season.
The New York Post reported that Jeter’s departure was related to a disagreement with chairman Bruce Sherman regarding spending on players for the upcoming season.
The former shortstop was reportedly told that an additional $15 million would not be available as previously stated.
Meanwhile, Sherman thanked Jeter for his work with the club.
“We have a large talent pool that will oversee both business and baseball decisions as we work to select a new CEO to lead our franchise,” Sherman said.
“The ownership group is committed to continuing to invest in the future of the franchise, and we are determined to build a team that returns to the postseason and excites Marlins fans and the local community.”
Jeter’s cabinet holds trophies such as Rookie of the Year, five-time World Series champion, Fall Classic MVP, 14 All-Star Games, five Gold Gloves and five Silver Sluggers, as well as his plaque as a member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
