The Spanish Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, and 36 of his counterparts from around the world have signed a statement in which they qualify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, supported by the Government of Belarus, of abhorrent and flagrant violation of its international rights. In it they defend that respect for human rights and peaceful relations between nations are the basis of international sport.
“We, as a collective of like-minded nations, affirm our support for the position of international sports organizations that: Russia and Belarus should not be allowed to organize, bid or be awarded any international sports events,” the note begins.
“Individual athletes selected by Russia and Belarus, administrators and teams representing the Russian or Belarusian state should be prohibited from competing in other countries, including those representing bodies, cities or brands that effectively represent Russia or Belarus, such as major soccer clubs.
Whenever possible, appropriate steps should be taken to limit sponsorship and other financial support from entities linked to Russian or Belarusian states.
We call on all international sports federations to support these principles and applaud all those who have already done so. We also welcome the decision of the International Paralympic Committee to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing at the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing. These restrictions should be in place until cooperation under the fundamental principles of international law is again possible.
We encourage all international sports organizations and all relevant legal bodies not to sanction athletes, coaches or officials who decide to unilaterally terminate their contracts with Russian, Belarusian or Ukrainian clubs, as well as not to prosecute or sanction sports organizers who decide to ban athletes. or teams selected by Russia or Belarus.
Furthermore, we encourage the international sports community to continue to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine, including by supporting the continuation of Ukrainian sport where possible.”
