President Jokowi to Grace Mandalika MotoGP, Boosting LombokS Economy
Indonesian President Joko Widodo, affectionately known as Jokowi, is set to make a highly anticipated appearance at the Mandalika Circuit on March 20th for the thrilling MotoGP Mandalika event. Beyond simply witnessing the high-octane race, Jokowi will personally present the coveted championship trophy to the victorious racer on the podium.
This data was revealed by Central Lombok Regent Lalu Pathul Bahri, who emphasized the President’s commitment to both the event and the region. Jokowi’s visit marks another in a series of trips to Lombok, where he has been closely monitoring the advancement of supporting infrastructure and facilities for the Mandalika Circuit, a key component of the Special economic Zone (SEZ).
“This demonstrates the President’s deep concern for the well-being of the community,” stated Lalu. “We hope that the MotoGP event will significantly contribute to economic growth in the area.”
The Regent expressed his optimism that the community will rally behind the 2022 Mandalika MotoGP, recognizing its potential to propel tourism growth in Central Lombok. He stressed the collective duty to ensure the success of the event, highlighting the long-term benefits that will accrue to the local population.

It’s inspiring to see leaders recognizing the power of MotoGP.
Moderator: Lombok’s regent, Lalu pathul Bahri, is hopeful that the event will substantially contribute to economic growth in the area. Do you think MotoGP can have such a tangible impact on a region’s economy?
Valentino Rossi: Absolutely. Look at some of the circuits we race at like Mugello or Jerez. They bring in thousands of tourists, fill hotels, and create jobs. MotoGP is a global spectacle, drawing in fans from all corners of the world, and that translates into real economic benefits for the host location. I have no doubt Mandalika will experience the same positive surge.
Moderator: the Mandalika Circuit itself is part of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). What are your perceptions of SEZs and their role in attracting major events like MotoGP?
Valentino Rossi: SEZs can be incredibly effective. By providing tailored regulations and incentives, they can attract investment, stimulate economic diversification, and create jobs. In the case of Mandalika, it seems the SEZ is creating the infrastructure needed to host world-class events and attract tourism, which is a win-win situation for everyone involved.
