Global judo Stars Set to Converge in Tunis for open Championship

The Tunisian capital will be abuzz with excitement as it hosts the prestigious Open of Tunis judo competition on March 12th and 13th. This international event is expected to draw a diverse field of athletes from across the globe, including powerhouse judo nations like Algeria, France, Malta, and the United states. The tournament will also welcome competitors from Asia and South America, showcasing the truly global reach of this martial art.

A total of 187 judokas, comprising 124 men and 63 women, are slated to participate, representing an notable 22 national teams spanning five continents. Tunisia, as the host nation, will field the largest contingent with 49 judokas (27 men and 22 women), followed closely by Algeria with 31 athletes.

The competition will feature seven weight categories for both men and women, ranging from -60 kg to +100 kg for men and -48 kg to +78 kg for women. This wide range of weight classes ensures thrilling matchups and highlights the diverse skillsets within the sport of judo.

Sarah Robinson: judo has always been a sport that transcends borders. Its engaging to see how the sport has grown in popularity, not just in customary powerhouses like Japan, France, and Korea, but also in countries like Algeria, the United States, and even Malta. The Tunis open is a testament to this global appeal and the unifying spirit of judo.

Moderator: Indeed, the diversity is remarkable. Over 187 judokas are registered, with Tunisia fielding the largest contingent. How meaningful is home advantage at a competition like this?

Sarah Robinson: Home advantage is always a factor, especially in a sport like judo that often comes down to mental fortitude. Competing in front of a passionate crowd, in a familiar habitat, can provide a huge boost. Tunisia, as the host nation, has a real chance to shine. However, they will face stiff competition from other strong teams like Algeria, France, and hopefully the USA.

Moderator: Speaking of strong teams, the competition will be fierce across all seven weight categories. Are there any particular matchups or weight classes you’re especially looking forward to?

Sarah Robinson: I’m excited about several matchups.The women’s -78kg weight category is always a nail-biter, and the men’s -81kg category is consistently stacked with talent. It will be engaging to see how the younger generation performs against the established veterans. The Tunis Open is a fantastic proving ground for rising stars.

Moderator: We’ve seen a surge of new talent in judo in recent years.How do you think this influx of younger athletes is impacting the sport?

Sarah Robinson: It’s refreshing and invigorating to see the emergence of new talents. Thes young athletes bring a fresh viewpoint and boundless energy to the sport.

They’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the mat and inspiring the next generation. Judo is in a fantastic position right now with this blend of experience and youthful dynamism.
