Angelique Kerber (34) failed in the second round of the WTA tournament in Miami. The former world number one from Kiel lost 6-2, 6-3 in her opening match to four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka (Japan). In the first round, Kerber had a bye.

Kerber, seeded in 13th position, conceded a quick break in the first set and never really got into the game. After just 1:01 hours, Osaka, who had been knocked out by an insulting heckling and eliminated early in Indian Wells just over a week ago, converted her third match point to victory. On her way to the Wimbledon triumph in 2018, Kerber eliminated the Japanese star player in the round of 16.

With Kerber, the last German player from the field of participants in Florida said goodbye. Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) and Nastasja Schunk (Ludwigshafen) were eliminated in the first round.

Struff gives up injured

Jan-Lennard Struff was eliminated in Miami in the first round due to injury. The Warsteiner gave up his game against the Spaniard Pedro Martinez on Thursday with a score of 3: 6 and 0: 2 because of a foot injury. Previously, Dominik Koepfer was eliminated from the Masters in the first round after a 7:6 (10:8), 4:6, 4:6 defeat against the American Mackanzie McDonald.

Things didn’t go any better for Daniel Altmaier (Kempen). The 23-year-old also had to give up in the first round after a 4:6, 4:6 against the US qualifier Jeffrey John Wolf.

Oscar Otte (Cologne), on the other hand, reached the second round with a 6:3, 6:4 win against the qualifier Mitchell Krueger from the USA. The number two seeded Olympic champion Alexander Zverev has a bye in the first round. The hard court tournament in the US state of Florida is endowed with around 8.6 million US dollars.
